Stockholm NGO Forum on Sustainable Consumption & Production

On June 26, the NGO Forum on Sustainable Consumption and Production will take place near Stockholm, Sweden. This meeting, involving NGOs from all around the world, is part of the larger 3rd International Experts Meeting on Sustainable Consumption and Production, and will only be for a few hours but address a wide range of critical issues and questions facing our planet. However, because of the importance of this discussion we invite participants to begin the exchange several weeks in advance, so that by the time we meet in Stockholm we will have a much better idea of who we are and what we want to achieve there.

On behalf of the Norwegian Forum for Environment and Development I would like to make some remarks to the draft key recommendations.
Firstly, the draft has to be seen in connection to the the second poistion paper which is currently being drafted, and some of our remarks may seen unnecessary if we at this time had known the content of the second paper. Here are our remarks:
1) When Anped mention the need to identify and clarify the specific programmes, we believe that Anped should be more specific. The programmes shoul be focused on major challenges for SCP like climate change, biodiversity and waste/ hazardous substances, and concepts like decarbonization and decoupling should be given a new spring.
3) When it comes to reporting and analysis we think it should be concidered to make a UN body responsible for the monitoring, assessments, reviews and reports to make each countries accountable for the lack of progress.
5) A broader global dialogue on SD is linked to IEG, the UN reforms, the discussions about a more vital CSD and an upgraded UNEP. Based on the recent experiences from CSD 15, it might be a better idea to establish regional dialogues. We think it is very important that the civil society, not only the countries, are parties in these dialogues.
6) We find it not so friutful just to discuss accountibilty in contrast responsibility. The wording is not so important compared to the task to implement the decision from WSSD to encourage development of a global framework on CSR.
