Dear Friends,

I am glad to see there is already a broad diversity how to introduce yourself. So I allow myself just to copy and past my standard vita. More details will hopefully appear during the discussions.

Sylvia Lorek is working as a researcher and policy consultant for sustainable consumption since 1993. She has studied household economics and nutrition (Oecotrophologie) at Fachhochschule Münster with focus on environmental and consumer consulting, as well as economics at the Open University Hagen, and the Universities of Münster and Duisburg. The combination of these two disciplines provides her with the tools - the individual micro-economic and the societal macroeconomic perspective - for a well-founded analysis of the contexts, in which the scientific and societal discourses about sustainable consumption take place.
Her engagement in sustainable consumption politics is rooted in ongoing NGO involvement. So she is coordinating the task force on lifestyle of the German NGO Forum of Environment and Development (www.forumue.de ). On the international level she is on the board of ANPED, The Northern Alliance on Sustainability, co-ordinating it’s Working Group on Sustainable Consumption and Production www.anped.org Further on, she member of the International Coalition on Sustainable Production and Consumption ICSPAC www.icspac.net. As her understanding of sustainable consumption explicitly includes the development aspect of sustainability she was on the board of Trans Fair Germany (1997-2001) www.transfair.org. As key note expert on sustainable consumption she was invited to the “First European Stakeholder Conference on Sustainable consumption and Production” in Ostend in 2004 and the “Second Expert meeting on Sustainable Consumption and Production” in Costa Rica 2005.
As scientist she has been Project Coordinator at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy from 1998-1999 www.wupperinst.org . Since 2000 she is based at the Sustainable Europe Research Institute www.seri.at. Here she is working on studies and as consultant for national und international organisations und institutes (among them OECD, EU, EEA and UNEP). She member of SCORE, the European scientific network on sustainable consumption.
